Constraints & Failure Points

  • A previously established Excel-based process counted the visible advertising text and invisible spaces that participants would actually see. An untested function in the proprietary production software was introduced in its place and counted non-translatable tag text and internal markup as visible characters.
  • The software could report that an advertisement exceeded a limit, but reviewers could not identify which visible characters created the excess. This mixed a technical measurement problem with the separate question of whether the translation itself met linguistic and regulatory requirements.
